    Regional Design Policy and Programmes for Economic Development
    With the prospect of a revised innovation policy from the European Commission that will include design (due in Autumn 2010) an increasing number of regions and nations are realising the significant role design can play in achieving innovation and wider economic development objectives. These two workshops will help those responsible for regional economic development policy and business development programmes fully understand the potential role of design through examples of global best practice and provide a framework for the creation of effective support programmes.

    For Industry and Business Advisors

    Managing New Product Development

This five day programme delivered over several months will develop the capacity of small and medium sized companies to manage the development of new products & services and the use of external design expertise. The objective is to build the confidence and capability of individual managers to champion and manage the use of design within their business; ultimately reducing lead times, developing stronger brands and saving costs.

Day 1. The competitive advantage of design – 14th May 2010
Day 2. Managing design in small & medium sized companies – 27th May 2010
Day 3 The technology of design and product prototypes – 10th June 2010
Day 4 Realising your brand assets – 24th June 2010
Day 5 Managing external design expertise – 1st July 2010

This course is accredited and can result in the award of 30 points at Masters degree level (this is a stand-alone module from the MDes qualification delivered by Cardiff School of Art & Design).

Businesses in some sectors may eligible be for 50% co-funding to attend this course. The courses above will take place in the Cardiff area but can be delivered at any location for groups upon request (minimum 4 people).

    For Industry

    Brand Essentials - One to One
    This half-day workshop is tailored for and delivered to individual organisations to help them understand and manage the brand process – building their confidence to define their specific needs and get the most out of working with external design agencies. This impartial advice will help you make the most of the money you invest; in what should be your most valuable asset – your brand.

The workshop includes:
- A thorough introduction to the brand process
- Discussion on how to define your brand values in relation to the competition
- A framework for specifying your needs via a comprehensive brief
- Guidance on how to find, select and manage the most appropriate external design expertise
- Post-workshop support in interpreting quotes & proposals from prospective design agencies
